About the BCLT

The Bolinas Community Land Trust owns and operates three buildings for a total of 15 dwellings of affordable housing.  The Bolinas Station is comprised of two townhouses which provide affordable housing for families, and the Bolinas Garage building which provides workforce housing with 3-single room occupancy units and 3-live/work studios ( ADA compliant). In addition, the Bolinas Garage has 3 commercial storefronts and a gas station, Bo-Gas.  The Bolinas Station compliments the historic Gibson House which provides Section 8 and very low income housing for a total of 7 dwellings.

The Land Trust’s mission is to create and sustain affordable housing opportunities in Bolinas in order to ensure that the unique character of our community is maintained through a diverse population.  In addition, we recognize that rural settings are not immune to urban blight.  The BCLT is a model our community can be proud of because we have taken urban models that work (transit oriented, mixed use housing) and applied them to our rural community successfully.  The BCLT's accomplishments are a reflection of our community, and could not be accomplished without our small town believing that what we do betters everyone's lives. Every choice we make is always with the goal to impact our entire community positively...and our record shows it:

Our recent accomplishments include:

  • Improved Downtown Bolinas with the  Bolinas Station Complex which, together with the "Gibson House" provides affordable housing for 17 adults and 5 children, and provides 3 commercial spaces which are locally owned and operated.
  • Created a website and offered regular office hours to to better serve our our tenants and our community.
  • An employer in Bolinas with a part time staff of 6 (gas station, property management and administration).
  • Refurbished the interior of the historic Gibson House which  is recognized as a model for very low and section 8 housing by the County. The exterior rehabilitation was completed in early 2010 through two consecutive Community Development Block Grants (CDBG).  The BCLT's dedication to the stewardship of our properties is reflected by the grant awards we have received.  The entire exterior project was paid for with HUD funds administrated through the Marin Community Redevelopment Agency, and no local fund raising was required.
  • Advocacy involvement in the Second Unit Amnesty Program, the Bolinas Community Plan, the Marin Housing Element and the Local Coastal Plan.
  • Received a $50,000 Challenge Gift from a local benefactor to encourage community support. The BCLT has leveraged this gift to increase our fund raising abilities.
  • Operates Bo-Gas, the only gas station between Mill Valley and Pt. Reyes, ensuring that West Marin has access to gas and to diesel locally (vital in an emergency situation) and has used good fiscal management to ensure that the BCLT can continue to operate Bo-Gas while creating an income stream for the BCLT.
  • Provides advocacy for tenants and non tenants in locating sources of rental assistance, health and human services support and legal aid.
  • Through volunteer sweat equity, created a permanent art installation at Bo-Gas.  The "Apotheosis of a Gas Pump",  has  beautified our downtown commercial district, while embracing our local personality.
  • Collaborates with other non profits to provide workshops and resources, including CLAM (series of shared home ownership workshops) and Marin County Health and Human Services (homeless survey and as a grant reviewer for the Continuum of Care).
  • Partnered with the BCPUD to request the County remove the prohibition of 2nd units in Bolinas to support affordable housing as mandated by state law (the County has indicated that the prohibition will be removed from County Code in the summer of 2010).
  • Participation in County wide affordable housing strategies.  Through invitation to round tables and work groups by the County, the BCLT has a strategic voice in affordable housing issues and can represent West Marin's unique position in County planning.
